Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center sponsors ThinkFirst Arizona, a local chapter of the National Injury Prevention Foundation. ThinkFirst is an award-winning, researched-based, comprehensive national brain and spinal cord injury prevention program. Barrow has been designated as the Arizona training center for this program.

ThinkFirst Arizona serves as the state chapter and training center for the ThinkFirst National Injury Prevention Foundation. The ThinkFirst Arizona program is located at Barrow Neurological Institute of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center noted as a:

  • Neuroscience Center of Excellence
  • Level 1 trauma center
  • Certified CARF and JCAHO facility
  • State-of-the-art, acute medical and rehabilitation facility

ThinkFirst is a brain and spinal cord injury prevention program that targets elementary, junior high and high school students, and their parents. The philosophy of the program is that young people should use their minds to protect their bodies.

ThinkFirst Arizona offers two programs:

ThinkFirst focuses on the most common causes of permanent injury:

  • Motor vehicle crashes
  • Gun violence
  • Recreational and water-related injuries
  • Falls
  • Bicycle and motorcycles crashes

The goals of the ThinkFirst program are to increase awareness of everyday injury risks and to promote safety habits that will continue throughout life. The program also makes clear the consequences of choices related to violence, drug use and alcohol use.

The ThinkFirst Arizona program reaches more than 10,000 children and young adults in the classroom setting each year. This program emphasizes that young people make choices every day and these choices affect not only themselves, but also the people who love and care about them. The program gives students the message that you can still have a fun without getting hurt if you "ThinkFirst" and use your mind to protect your body. Brain and spinal cord injuries can last forever, so think about your choices.
