Clinical Services
Outpatient
Neuropsychology Clinic
This Clinic sees both children and adults
with known or suspected neurologic conditions to help document the
nature and extent of their neuropsychological impairments.
This information is used for differential diagnosis and treatment
planning. Patients with almost any neurologic condition are
evaluated when there is a question of disturbances in the higher
integrative brain functions. The Clinic frequently evaluates
patients to help determine whether they have a psychiatric or
neurologic condition.
Patients and families are also seen for
psychotherapy to help with the adjustment process associated with a
brain disorder.
Inpatient
Neuropsychology Consultation Service
This service provides inpatient
neuropsychological consultation to patients who are hospitalized at
the Barrow Neurological Institute and St. Joseph's Hospital.
Neuropsychological evaluations are often requested to aid in
patient management and discharge planning.
Epilepsy
Monitoring Unit
Patients admitted to the Epilepsy Monitoring
Unit undergo neuropsychological assessment to determine
patterns of neuropsychological function or dysfunction that help
define whether a lesion is lateralized to one side of the
brain. Neuropsychologists also participate in the Wada
procedure. Patients who are suspected to have nonepileptic
seizure-like events are also evaluated. As in other clinical
settings, neuropsychologists on the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit are
actively involved in a variety of clinical research studies to
improve the treatment of patients with epilepsy.
Inpatient
Neurorehabilitation Unit
Neuropsychologists are actively involved with
patients on the Inpatient Neurorehabilitation Unit to evaluate the
cognitive and behavioral consequences associated with various
disorders affecting the brain and spinal cord. The
neuropsychologists work with other rehabilitation team members to
clarify rehabilitation goals and to help patients engage in the
rehabilitation process to maximize their recovery. The
neuropsychologists are actively involved in both cognitive
rehabilitation and psychotherapy of patients seen on that
unit. Neuropsychologists also help educate patients and
family members about the expected effects of their neurological
condition on cognition and behavioral functioning.
